Walking in Sofia Environs with Rental Car – Part 2

Our journey continues with the no less interesting Gornobogrovski monastery "St. George ". It can be reached very easily by rental car, because it is located only 16 km away from Sofia. On its altar, there is a huge cross, which, according to legend, was brought from Jerusalem by the Crusaders, who held several crusades designed to liberate the Holy Land from the infidels between the 11th and 14th centuries. Passing through Bulgaria, they left this huge stone, which was carved with many crosses. It was kept to this day in the church and is built into the altar. People believe that the stone helps with various diseases, and go to the monastery to touch it, to pray and seek healing.

The journey will end with a small walk to the ravine monastery "St. Petka". The monastery is located a few kilometres from the town of Bankya, a high and beautiful place that reveals an incredibly beautiful view of Vitosha and the Sofia field. According to various legends, it was founded during the reign of Tsar Ivan Assen II, at a place sanctified by the relics of St. Petka the Bulgarian. Nowadays, it is an acting female monastery; in its yard, there are residential and commercial buildings, as well as several distinct corners with tables and chairs where one can relax conveniently after a long walk.
